A Florida private jet crash killed all nine people aboard a business aircraft after it plunged into a residential neighbourhood in Greenacres, Palm Beach County, on Sunday, November 1. The Learjet 60, registered as N722BD, was travelling from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas when it crashed at approximately 12:50 pm local time.

The aircraft plunged towards a road near Cresthaven Boulevard and Military Trail, exploding into a massive fireball on impact. Videos recorded by motorists showed the jet descending almost vertically before the explosion. The impact left a huge crater, scattered debris across the area and sent thick black smoke into the sky. The aircraft reportedly came down close to residential properties.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis described the incident as a “cataclysmic plane crash”, saying it looked like a missile coming down and leaving a large crater. Residents described hearing a deafening explosion, seeing flames and finding debris near their homes. One resident said debris struck his house and everything around the crash site was on fire.

Air traffic control recordings reveal that the pilots had reported moderate turbulence, icing and precipitation while flying at around 35,000 feet. They requested to climb another 2,000 feet in search of smoother conditions. One pilot described the ice accumulation as manageable but reported moderate turbulence.

The situation soon deteriorated. The crew reported descending at 10,000 feet per minute before warning of an overspeed condition at 20,000 feet per minute. A pilot declared an emergency and issued Mayday calls, later reporting a descent rate of 22,000 feet per minute and a sharp bank. The chilling final transmissions included, “We're going to crash into the ground” and “We're out of time.” Flight-tracking data from Flightradar24 showed that the descent rate briefly exceeded 32,000 feet per minute, with the last recorded altitude at 8,750 feet.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is leading the investigation, with the Federal Aviation Administration assisting. Aircraft manufacturer Bombardier has pledged to cooperate. Authorities have not released the identities of the nine victims or established the cause of the crash.
