The Centre on Wednesday extended the tenure of Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri by one year , allowing the senior diplomat to continue in office until July 14, 2027 . The move is expected to ensure continuity in India's foreign policy leadership at a time of evolving geopolitical challenges and ongoing diplomatic engagements.

According to an official order, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved Misri's extension beyond his scheduled retirement on July 14, 2026 , under the provisions of Fundamental Rule 56(d) . The rule permits the government to extend the service of select senior officials including the foreign secretary, defence secretary, home secretary, Intelligence Bureau director and the secretary of the Research and Analysis Wing beyond the retirement age of 60 in the interest of administrative continuity and national priorities.

A 1989-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, Misri assumed charge as Foreign Secretary in June 2024 after serving as the Deputy National Security Adviser .

Widely regarded as one of India's foremost experts on China , Misri served as India's ambassador to China between 2019 and 2021 and played a significant role in diplomatic engagement following the Galwan Valley clashes in 2020. His experience is considered valuable as India continues to manage complex regional and global strategic challenges.

Misri also holds the rare distinction of serving as private secretary to three prime ministers Inder Kumar Gujral, Manmohan Singh and Narendra Modi.

Over a distinguished diplomatic career, he has served as India's ambassador to Spain and Myanmar, besides postings in Pakistan, the United States, Germany, Belgium and Sri Lanka. His extension is expected to provide stability and continuity in the conduct of India's foreign policy during a crucial period of international engagement.
