Former MLA Jajala Surender Arrested During Tadwai Farmers’ Protest
Political tensions ran high in Tadwai mandal of Kamareddy district on Tuesday after police detained former Yellareddy MLA Jajala Surender and several BRS leaders ahead of a planned farmers' protest against the government's urea distribution app.
The demonstration, organized by the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) , was intended to press for the withdrawal of the Urea App , which the party claims has created difficulties for farmers in accessing fertilizer. Thousands of farmers were expected to join the protest under the leadership of Surender, prompting authorities to step up security measures across the mandal.
The situation remained tense from the early hours of the day as police personnel were deployed at key locations to prevent the gathering. Despite the restrictions, Surender reportedly reached Tadwai on a motorcycle and attempted to join farmers assembled for the protest.
As he moved towards the protest site and raised slogans in support of BRS and Telangana , police stopped him from proceeding further. A brief exchange ensued between the former legislator and police officials before he was taken into custody and shifted to the Birkoor Police Station .
The detention sparked anger among party workers and supporters, who accused the government of suppressing democratic protests and silencing farmers' concerns. The arrest also heightened tensions in the area, with supporters gathering at various locations in solidarity with the protest.
Meanwhile, police prevented several BRS leaders and activists from reaching the Tadwai crossroads , the proposed venue of the dharna. Many of them, along with participating farmers, were taken into preventive custody and shifted to different police stations in the district.
BRS leaders alleged that they were denied the opportunity to hold a peaceful agitation on issues affecting the farming community. They maintained that the protest was aimed at highlighting the hardships faced by farmers and demanding immediate changes to the fertilizer distribution system.
Police officials, however, defended their actions, stating that the measures were taken purely to maintain law and order and avoid any disruption to public peace.
The incident has added a fresh political dimension to the ongoing debate over agricultural policies in Telangana, with the opposition and the ruling establishment increasingly at odds over issues affecting farmers.
