Former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed calls time on international cricket, eyes Test coaching role
Sarfaraz Ahmed , the only Pakistani captain to win two major ICC finals against traditional rivals India, on Sunday announced his retirement from all forms of cricket , bringing an end to a remarkable playing career.
Sarfaraz, who last represented Pakistan in a Test against Australia at Perth in December 2023 , conveyed his decision through a statement issued by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) . Sources say that following this announcement, Sarfaraz could take over as head coach of Pakistan’s Test team , a position that has been vacant since Azhar Mahmood served as interim coach last year.
Turning 39 in May, Sarfaraz has recently taken on multiple roles, including membership in the national selection committee and serving as mentor and manager of Pakistan’s under-19 and Shaheens squads . While he played a first-class match as recently as October 2025, he now plans to focus on coaching and shaping the next generation of Pakistani cricketers.
Reflecting on his career, Sarfaraz said, “I could never have dreamt of captaining Pakistan in all three formats and winning the ICC U-19 World Cup in 2006 and the 2017 Champions Trophy … these are unforgettable moments for me.”
As captain, Sarfaraz’s achievements were remarkable . He led Pakistan to victory in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy , defeated India in both ICC tournament finals , and captained the team in 100 international matches across formats . Throughout his leadership, he was known for promoting fearless cricket and fostering unity within the squad.
The Karachi-born cricketer represented Pakistan in 54 Tests, 117 ODIs, and 61 T20 internationals , leaving behind a legacy defined by courage, leadership, and unwavering commitment. Fans and analysts now eagerly await his next chapter, potentially as the head coach of Pakistan’s Test team, where he could continue shaping the side he once led with distinction.
