Former World Chess Champion Vladimir Kramnik Suspended Over Unproven Cheating Allegations

The international governing body for chess has suspended former world champion Vladimir Kramnik for at least one year after concluding that he repeatedly made unsubstantiated cheating allegations against fellow players, including late American grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky .

The federation said Kramnik violated its rules on cyber bullying by publicly accusing identifiable players of cheating without providing adequate evidentiary support or using the sport's official disciplinary process. The decision reflects the governing body's effort to balance its fight against cheating with the need to protect players from unsupported public accusations.

The controversy began last year when Kramnik questioned Naroditsky's online performances and repeatedly suggested he had cheated. Naroditsky , a respected grandmaster who helped fuel chess' online boom through his educational YouTube videos and livestreams, strongly denied the allegations.

In its ruling, the federation stressed that combating cheating remains one of its highest priorities. However, it said allegations must be backed by credible evidence and handled through established procedures. Public accusations without proof, it added, can cause unjustified reputational harm and undermine confidence in the disciplinary framework.

Kramnik has rejected the suspension and said he will appeal the decision. In a statement on social media and in comments to the Associated Press, he described the verdict as unlawful and expressed confidence that it would eventually be overturned, saying he would pursue every available legal avenue to restore his reputation.

Naroditsky , who died at his North Carolina home in October 2025 at the age of 29 , was found to have suffered an abnormal heartbeat caused by an accidental overdose , according to a toxicology report.

Before his death, Naroditsky had spoken about the emotional toll of the allegations, saying they left him feeling that strong performances were often viewed with suspicion. Following his death, Kramnik called it a tragedy but rejected claims linking his accusations to the grandmaster's passing, insisting there was no factual basis for such assertions.

The case has renewed debate within the chess community over how cheating allegations should be addressed, with the federation reinforcing that protecting the game's integrity must go hand in hand with fairness, evidence and due process.
