Four-Day Rain Alert for Telugu States: IMD Warns of Lightning, Strong Winds Till Sep 14

The Telugu states are bracing for a spell of heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds over the next four days as a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal strengthens monsoon activity across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heightened rainfall activity from September 11 to 14, with some areas likely to receive heavy to very heavy showers.

The weather system developed over the North Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas under the influence of an upper-air cyclonic circulation extending over the North Bay and neighbouring Bangladesh. The system is expected to influence weather conditions over the Telugu states, triggering widespread rainfall and thunderstorms.

In Telangana, the intensity of rainfall is expected to increase on September 12 and 13. The IMD has warned of moderate to heavy rain accompanied by gusty winds, thunderstorms and lightning, particularly across northern and eastern districts. Some locations could record rainfall of around 50 to 70 mm.

The weather is also likely to turn unsettled in Hyderabad and parts of southern Telangana, where moderate thunderstorms and rain are expected on September 12 and 13. Rainfall chances are particularly high on September 12. However, Gadwal, Wanaparthy and Narayanpet are expected to see a comparatively weaker impact, with rain likely only at isolated locations.

The rainfall activity in Telangana is expected to ease gradually after September 14, with the intensity forecast to decline between September 15 and 17. However, thunderstorms and strong winds could continue to create brief spells of intense weather even as the broader system weakens. Current IMD warnings also place Telangana among several states facing significant monsoon activity.

In Andhra Pradesh, the Amaravati Regional Meteorological Centre said the low-pressure area formed under the influence of the upper-air circulation over the North Bay of Bengal. On September 11, isolated heavy rain is expected over North Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, while thunderstorms accompanied by lightning could occur at isolated places across Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Rayalaseema.

The weather is expected to become more active on Friday, September 12. North Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam could receive heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places, while isolated heavy rain is likely over South Coastal Andhra Pradesh. Thunderstorms with lightning are also expected over Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Rayalaseema.

Similar conditions are likely to persist on Saturday, September 13, keeping several parts of the state under the influence of the weather system. Strong surface winds reaching up to 60 kmph are expected over parts of Andhra Pradesh until September 14, adding to the risk of disruption during intense thunderstorms.
