Four-Day Week, No Dinners: Pakistan’s crisis measures draw mixed reactions

Pakistan’s latest austerity measures to deal with the economic fallout of tensions involving Iran have generated an unusual mix of concern and humour, with several of the government’s announcements quickly becoming talking points online.

In a televised address, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif outlined a series of steps aimed at reducing fuel consumption as global oil markets face disruption. The crisis is linked to instability around the Strait of Hormuz , a narrow passage through which nearly a fifth of the world’s oil shipments pass.

Among the most widely discussed measures is the introduction of a four-day working week , along with a directive that half of employees in both the public and private sectors work from home . The government says the move is intended to limit commuting and conserve fuel at a time when rising oil prices are putting pressure on Pakistan’s import-dependent economy.

The austerity drive also includes several symbolic restrictions. Government departments have been instructed to cut their spending by 20 per cent , while the purchase of official cars, air-conditioning systems and other luxury items has been temporarily banned. Ministers and senior officials have been barred from non-essential foreign travel, and official meetings are expected to shift to virtual platforms.

Other steps include reducing fuel allocations for government vehicles and suspending many ceremonial activities, such as official dinners and large hotel-based seminars.

While authorities insist the measures reflect the seriousness of the economic situation, the breadth of the announcements, particularly bans on state dinners and office travel has prompted a wave of witty commentary on social media.

Despite the lighter public reaction, officials maintain the objective is clear: conserve energy, control government spending and prepare the economy for possible disruptions in global oil supply.
