Free Palestine! Stanford Students Walk Out During Sundar Pichai's Commencement Speech

Stanford Stadium turned into a stage for activism as roughly 200 graduates stood, booed, and walked out the moment Google CEO Sundar Pichai stepped up to deliver his commencement address. The tension began even earlier, when Stanford President Jonathan Levin introduced Pichai as a leader who modeled "thoughtfulness, humility and determination," a line that drew immediate boos from sections of the crowd.

The walkout, organized weeks in advance by Stanford Students for Justice in Palestine, targeted Project Nimbus , the 1.2 billion dollar cloud and AI contract that Google and Amazon signed with Israel's government in 2021, covering defense and security operations for seven years. Protesters carried Palestinian flags and banners reading " Genocide Runs on Google " and " ICE Spies with Google AI ," widening their grievances to include Google's work with ICE and firms like Palantir.

Amid the chaos, the ceremony retained its usual playful chaos too, with graduates riding inflatable horses and dressed as Lightning McQueen, a surreal contrast to the protest unfolding around them.

Pichai, who earned his master's degree at Stanford in 1995 before joining Google in 2004 and helping build Chrome, stayed composed. He sidestepped artificial intelligence entirely, joking the topic sat in the last two letters of his name, a notable choice as other tech leaders faced boos this year for leaning into AI talk. Instead he urged graduates to choose optimism, embrace difficult challenges, and "set your heart ablaze."

Google downplayed the moment , calling it smaller than the pro Palestine protests of 2024 and 2025. Yet history suggests this fight runs deep, the company has already fired around 50 employees over internal sit-ins protesting the same contract.

As chants of "Free Free Palestine" rang out, a new generation of graduates refused to let silence be mistaken for consent.
