Free Power, ₹500 LPG, New Pensions: Telangana’s August 15 Bonanza

Telangana is preparing to use Independence Day as a launchpad for a fresh round of welfare expansion and development initiatives, with the State government expected to announce several measures aimed at widening social-security coverage and improving access to essential services.

The initiatives, being pursued under the Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, form part of the next phase of its welfare and development agenda. The proposed measures cover pensions, electricity, cooking gas, food security, healthcare and the welfare of gig workers.

A major focus will be the expansion of the Cheyutha social security scheme. The government currently provides pensions to around 41 lakh beneficiaries, and another 2.25 lakh people are expected to be brought under the programme. The proposed beneficiaries will include people affected by thalassemia and sickle cell anaemia, offering additional financial support to families dealing with long-term health-related expenses.

The government is also planning to widen the reach of the Gruha Jyothi scheme, under which eligible households receive free electricity for consumption of up to 200 units a month. Around 3–4 lakh additional families are expected to benefit from the expansion.

Similarly, the Mahalakshmi scheme is set to cover another five lakh families through the subsidised LPG cylinder priced at ₹500. The move is expected to provide some relief to households facing rising cooking-fuel expenses.

Another significant exercise will be the distribution of 1.05 crore smart ration cards across the State. The rollout is expected to begin with the first phase in Sangareddy, strengthening access to food-security benefits while helping update beneficiary records.

The State is also preparing to inaugurate the Sanathnagar TIMS Hospital on August 15, adding to its efforts to expand public healthcare infrastructure. At the same time, a Gig Workers Welfare Act is expected to come into effect, providing a formal framework for social-security and welfare measures for app-based and platform workers.

Beyond immediate welfare measures, the government is pushing ahead with several large infrastructure projects. Foundation work for Indiramma Towers is expected to begin in September, while the Gandhi Sarovar and Musi rejuvenation projects are also being accelerated. Development of Future City remains another major priority.

Plans are also being advanced to speed up construction of new facilities at Osmania General Hospital and NIMS, reflecting the government's broader focus on strengthening healthcare capacity.
