Fresh Low-Pressure Area Forms In Bay Of Bengal, Odisha On Red Warning As Flood Threat Grows
Odisha remains on high alert as a fresh low-pressure area has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red warning for extremely heavy rain in parts of the state.
The weather system has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining the West Bengal and north Odisha coasts. The IMD said it is likely to move nearly northwestwards and become more marked over the next 24 hours.
The fresh system has raised concern as flooding continues in northern Odisha, with about 2.70 lakh people affected across 503 villages in 52 blocks, according to officials. More than 95,000 people had been moved to safer locations as of Saturday, while the government has continued relief and rescue efforts.
The red warning covers Mayurbhanj in Odisha, with extremely heavy rain possible in the next 24 hours. Similar warnings have been issued for Jhargram and Paschim Medinipur in neighbouring West Bengal.
The IMD has also warned of squally winds of 40-50 kmph, with gusts up to 60 kmph, over parts of the Bay of Bengal and along the coasts of West Bengal, Odisha, Bangladesh and north Andhra Pradesh from August 16 to 18. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea during this period.
The flood situation remains serious in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar, where rivers including the Baitarani, Brahmani, Salandi, Jalaka and Budhabalanga have inundated several areas. Kendrapara has also been placed on high alert amid the continuing flood threat.
Officials said water levels in some rivers have started falling. The Subarnarekha, which had been rising, also showed a decline on Sunday morning. However, authorities are maintaining a close watch as the new weather system could bring more rain to already flooded areas.
The Odisha government has alerted district collectors and asked urban authorities to remain prepared for any fresh emergency. Officials have also been directed to keep people informed about relief and preparedness measures.
