From 20 Injuries to a Historic Fifth: India Beat Germany 3-1 for Best World Cup Finish in 52 Years

From beginning their World Cup preparations with a list of nearly 20 injuries to securing their best finish in 52 years, India’s women’s hockey team has completed a remarkable turnaround.

India ended their FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup campaign with a commanding 3-1 win over higher-ranked Germany, finishing fifth and giving the young squad a major confidence boost ahead of the Asian Games.

The victory marked India’s best performance at the World Cup since 1974, when the team finished fourth in the inaugural edition. The latest achievement was particularly significant as the squad featured 11 World Cup debutants.

Strength and conditioning coach Dr Wayne Lombard said the transformation since January reflected the hard work put in by the players and support staff.

“When we came in January, we had a list of about 20 injuries and now we have finished fifth in the World Cup. It says it all,” Lombard said.

India produced a strong finish against Germany, scoring three times in the final 17 minutes. Ishika broke the deadlock in the 43rd minute before Navneet Kaur scored twice, in the 44th and 47th minutes. Germany pulled one back late through Lynn Krings, but India comfortably sealed a memorable victory.

Coach Sjoerd Marijne, who had guided India to a historic fourth-place finish at the Tokyo Olympics, hailed the campaign as a major step forward.

“What the girls have achieved, they have rewritten history,” he said, adding that the team must now carry this confidence into the upcoming Asian Games.

India had missed out on a semifinal spot after a goalless draw against Australia, but Lombard believes the Germany victory showed the team’s growing belief and ability to compete with the world’s best.

Assistant coach Mathias Vila credited greater exposure to stronger teams and improved structure for India’s progress. Lombard, however, stressed that consistency remains the key.

“This team has the potential to win medals at World Cups and Olympics,” he said. “We need to produce this kind of performance regularly.”

From an injury-hit beginning to a historic finish, India’s women have shown that their rise is far from over.
