From ‘The Lion’ To ‘The Tiger’: Trump Backed Conservatives Gain Ground Across Latin America

Conservative leaders in Latin America are consolidating power across the region, with Trump endorsed Colombian candidate Abelardo de la Espriella appearing set to win the country's presidential election and extend a broader political shift toward right leaning governments focused on security, migration control, economic liberalisation, and stronger law enforcement. The development is being closely watched internationally as another sign of changing voter sentiment across Latin America.

With nearly all votes counted, de la Espriella led rival Ivan Cepeda by about one percentage point, or roughly 251,000 votes. While election authorities had not formally declared a winner, challenges to the result are not expected to alter the outcome. The contest highlighted deep political polarisation in Colombia following the presidency of Gustavo Petro , the country's first left wing leader.

Known as “The Tiger” , de la Espriella campaigned on a hard line security agenda that includes ending peace talks with armed groups, expanding prison infrastructure, boosting oil production, widening the tax base, and reducing the size of the state. The lawyer and businessman, who built his campaign around the nationalist Defenders of the Homeland movement, is expected to take office on August 7 if the result is confirmed.

The apparent Colombian result adds to a growing list of conservative victories. In Argentina, Javier Milei , known as “The Lion” , sharply reduced inflation through spending cuts. Ecuador reelected Daniel Noboa , Honduras elected Nasry Asfura, Chile chose Jose Antonio Kast , and Costa Rica elected Laura Fernandez, all campaigning on stronger security and governance platforms.

Analysts say the rise of conservative leaders in Latin America reflects voter frustration over crime, economic uncertainty, migration pressures, and dissatisfaction with established political parties. The trend has increasingly aligned parts of the region with the political messaging and policy priorities associated with Donald Trump , creating a new conservative bloc that could influence regional diplomacy, trade, and security cooperation in the years ahead.
