Students of BC residential schools in Andhra Pradesh are setting an inspiring example by combining education with environmental responsibility. Through the state government’s Wealth Out of Waste (WOW) initiative, they are transforming discarded materials into creative and practical products, proving that sustainability can begin in classrooms.

Launched in 109 Mahatma Jyotirao Phule BC Welfare Residential Schools, the programme encourages students to recycle plastic, scrap metal, old clothes, wood and other waste into useful items. What was once litter on campuses is now being redesigned into decorative pieces, household essentials and innovative models.

The initiative was introduced in response to growing environmental concerns caused by plastic pollution and improper waste disposal. By turning waste into reusable products, students are not only cleaning their surroundings but also learning valuable lessons in conservation, teamwork and innovation.

Across the state, each school has showcased its own creativity. Some students have crafted study tables and chairs from discarded materials, while others have designed bird feeders, garden models and decorative items using plastic bottles and coconut waste. Particularly striking are chandeliers made from electronic waste and incense sticks prepared from dried flower petals.

One notable innovation has come from Narpala residential school, where students developed a low-cost drip irrigation system using used plastic bottles. The model promotes water conservation while addressing plastic waste an idea officials believe could benefit farmers.

Beyond creativity, the programme is gradually transforming campuses into plastic-free campuses . Teachers and parents report improved hygiene and growing environmental awareness among students. More importantly, the initiative is nurturing social responsibility , teamwork , and self-confidence .

State BC Welfare Minister S. Savitha commended the students, stating that their efforts demonstrate how proper encouragement can unlock extraordinary potential and build a sustainable future .
