The upcoming G7 summit in France is set to highlight growing tensions among Western allies, with US President Donald Trump expected to face scrutiny from French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney over trade, security and global conflicts.

Once known for their close diplomatic relationship, Trump and Macron now openly disagree on issues ranging from tariffs and NATO to Ukraine and the Iran conflict . Macron has criticized the uncertainty surrounding US foreign policy and invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to join summit discussions, signaling Europe's continued focus on support for Kyiv.

Carney, who gained international attention earlier this year for defending the rules-based global order , is expected to adopt a more cautious approach toward Trump. With a crucial review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) due on July 1, Canada is seeking to avoid further trade tensions with Washington. More than 70 percent of Canadian exports go to the United States, making the agreement vital for the Canadian economy.

Relations between Ottawa and Washington have deteriorated amid Trump's trade policies and repeated remarks suggesting Canada could become the " 51st state ." At the same time, Carney is working to diversify Canada's trade ties through closer engagement with European partners.

Beyond personal and political tensions, leaders gathering from June 15-17 will discuss the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East , global trade disputes, economic security, artificial intelligence , and international cooperation. French officials hope the summit can reinforce unity among major democracies at a time of rising geopolitical uncertainty .

With disagreements over security, trade and diplomacy increasingly visible, the summit is expected to test the cohesion of the G7 and the future direction of Western alliances .
