French and Swiss authorities are preparing extensive security and border restrictions ahead of the upcoming G7 summit scheduled in Evian-les-Bains, France, amid growing concerns over possible violent protests in the region.

The summit, set to take place from June 15-17, will bring together leaders of major economies, including US President Donald Trump , to discuss pressing global issues such as the Middle East conflict, the war in Ukraine, and global economic imbalances .

Authorities on both sides of the border are bracing for large-scale demonstrations, particularly in nearby Geneva, which has previously witnessed unrest during major international gatherings. Activist groups, including anti-capitalist, environmental, and feminist organisations, have called for protests targeting global economic policies, climate issues, and political leadership, including criticism of Trump.

In response, Switzerland will deploy around 4,000 military personnel to support police operations, enforce airspace restrictions , and manage patrols on Lake Geneva and key transport routes. France, meanwhile, will mobilise more than 13,000 police and gendarmerie officers , along with additional border control staff.

Several border crossings will face restrictions, while residents in parts of the host region will require special permits. Authorities have also advised remote working and reduced travel, as over 110,000 cross-border commuters are expected to be affected.

Businesses in Geneva have begun securing storefronts, and some international organisations are shifting staff to remote work. While officials have set up contingency funds for potential damages, they acknowledge that unrest during the summit cannot be ruled out .
