Gadkari Flags Off Hero’s Flex-Fuel Bikes, Strengthening India’s Green Mobility Mission
India took another significant step towards cleaner and more sustainable transportation as Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari joined Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri in launching Hero MotoCorp’s first flex-fuel motorcycles in New Delhi.
The launch marks a major milestone in the country's efforts to reduce dependence on conventional fossil fuels and promote environment-friendly alternatives . Congratulating Hero MotoCorp on the initiative, Gadkari said the development aligns closely with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of building a cleaner, self-reliant and sustainable mobility ecosystem .
As the world's largest two-wheeler market , India has a unique opportunity to lead the global transition towards flex-fuel transportation . These vehicles can run on a blend of petrol and ethanol, offering a cleaner alternative to traditional fuels while strengthening the country's energy security goals .
Highlighting the environmental benefits of the technology, Gadkari noted that wider adoption of flex-fuel vehicles could reduce carbon monoxide emissions by up to 77 percent . Such a shift would not only contribute to cleaner air but also help India advance its long-term sustainability objectives.
The minister also underlined the economic advantages of the transition. According to estimates shared during the event, increased use of flex-fuel technology could help the country save nearly ₹1.44 lakh crore in foreign exchange by reducing crude oil imports. This would strengthen India’s energy independence while easing pressure on the import bill.
Beyond environmental and economic gains, the initiative is expected to create a positive impact across rural India. Higher demand for ethanol and biofuels could generate fresh opportunities for farmers, strengthen rural energy security , and encourage waste-to-wealth initiatives that convert agricultural residue and biomass into valuable fuel resources.
Industry experts view the launch as an important signal of the automotive sector's growing commitment to alternative fuel technologies . The move also reflects stronger collaboration between the government, fuel producers and automobile manufacturers in shaping the future of mobility.
With flex-fuel motorcycles now entering the market, India is positioning itself at the forefront of a transportation revolution that balances economic growth, environmental responsibility and energy security. The launch is widely seen as a decisive step towards building a cleaner, greener and more self-reliant future for Indian mobility.
