Game Changer: India's First Locally Assembled Airbus C295 Completes Maiden Flight
India has written a new chapter in its defence manufacturing journey as the first locally assembled Airbus C295 military transport aircraft successfully completed its maiden test flight from the Tata Airbus Final Assembly Line in Vadodara, Gujarat . The achievement is being seen by defence experts as one of the most significant milestones in Indian aerospace since Independence.
The aircraft had earlier rolled out of the Vadodara facility on May 12 , well ahead of its original September 2026 target . That early rollout highlighted the growing efficiency and maturity of India’s emerging private defence manufacturing ecosystem, which is increasingly taking on complex aerospace projects once considered beyond domestic capability.
The Vadodara plant was jointly inaugurated in October 2024 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. It is India’s first private sector final assembly line for military aircraft , marking a structural shift in how defence aviation is produced in the country. The facility handles final assembly, systems integration, testing, and long term support, signalling a full scale manufacturing ecosystem rather than simple assembly work.
The programme stems from a ₹21,935 crore contract signed in September 2021 between the Defence Ministry and Airbus for 56 C295 aircraft to replace the Indian Air Force’s ageing Avro fleet. Under the agreement, the first 16 aircraft are being delivered in fly away condition from Spain, while the remaining 40 are being built in India at Vadodara. Full delivery of all 40 India made aircraft is scheduled by August 2031 .
The project is supported by a strong domestic supply chain involving 37 Indian companies , making it one of the most extensive defence manufacturing collaborations in the country. The initiative is also expected to generate around 3,000 direct jobs in Vadodara alone, boosting the local industrial economy.
Indigenous content in the aircraft will gradually increase, with the final 24 units expected to contain up to 75 percent Indian sourced components . Key systems, including the electronic warfare suite, for the entire fleet are being developed and integrated by Bharat Electronics Limited.
The C295 is a twin engine turboprop designed for tactical transport roles, including troop movement, cargo delivery, medical evacuation, and humanitarian assistance. It can operate from short and semi prepared airstrips, making it particularly valuable for India’s diverse terrain, including remote and mountainous regions. The aircraft can carry up to 40 paratroopers or 71 passengers depending on configuration.
Officials indicate that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to preside over the formal induction ceremony later this year . The Vadodara facility is also being positioned for future expansion into export markets, signalling India’s ambition to become a global hub for military aerospace production.
With this successful maiden flight on Wednesday , India is no longer just assembling aircraft on foreign blueprints. It is steadily building an ecosystem capable of designing, integrating, and delivering advanced military platforms at scale, marking a decisive step in its journey toward defence self-reliance.
