Gandhi Sarovar Project Gets Defence Ministry Approval In Hyderabad
In a major boost to the Telangana government’s ambitious Musi River rejuvenation initiative , the Centre has accorded approval for the proposed ‘Gandhi Sarovar Project’ at Bapu Ghat in Hyderabad, paving the way for large-scale development along the riverfront.
The clearance was granted by the Ministry of Defence , enabling the state to utilise 83.818 acres of defence land located under the Golconda Artillery Centre for the execution of the project. The decision marks a significant step forward for one of the state’s flagship urban renewal and eco-restoration plans.
Welcoming the development, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy thanked Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and the Indian Army , describing the approval as a “historic milestone” in advancing Telangana’s development vision. He said the project would significantly strengthen efforts to restore the Musi River while creating world-class public infrastructure.
Planned as a landmark riverfront attraction, the Gandhi Sarovar Project envisions a 150-metre tall statue of Mahatma Gandhi , a dedicated museum, a London Eye-style giant observation wheel , cycling tracks, boating facilities, and multiple recreational and cultural spaces. Officials said the detailed project report (DPR) and design work had already been completed earlier, and the latest clearance now enables implementation to move ahead.
According to the government, the project is expected to transform the Bapu Ghat stretch into a major eco-cultural and tourism hub , improving urban liveability while also restoring ecological balance along the Musi river basin. The initiative is also being positioned as a key component of Telangana’s broader strategy to develop sustainable urban infrastructure.
The Chief Minister noted that the collaboration with the Centre and the Defence establishment reflects strong institutional support for large-scale public development projects in the state.
