A German Cup match descended into chaos on Friday night after fireworks and other objects were thrown from the stands and supporters invaded the pitch, forcing a lengthy stoppage before Kaiserslautern eventually sealed a dramatic 1-0 extra-time victory over Waldhof Mannheim.

The first-round tie was locked at 0-0 and heading towards extra time when disorder erupted at the stadium. Fans from both ends of the ground threw flares, fireworks and other objects onto the pitch, with some of them narrowly missing players as they attempted to leave the field.

The situation escalated when several Waldhof Mannheim supporters entered the pitch, prompting a major security response. Police officers in riot gear and mounted police moved into position and worked to push the fans back and restore order.

The match was suspended for just under 30 minutes, with players forced to wait as officials and security personnel brought the situation under control.

Once play finally resumed, the focus returned to football, but the match remained tense and evenly balanced. With penalties appearing increasingly likely, Ibrahim Kanate produced the decisive moment in the final minute of extra time.

His late goal handed second-division side Kaiserslautern a 1-0 victory, sending them through to the second round of the German Cup and ending Mannheim's hopes of causing an upset.

While Kaiserslautern celebrated a hard-fought win, the dramatic scenes in the stands and the prolonged interruption overshadowed much of the contest, turning what began as a tightly fought cup tie into a night of disruption, security concerns and late football drama.
