GHMC Intensifies Sanitation Drive in Charminar Zone Ahead of Ramadan
With the holy month of Ramadan approaching, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has intensified sanitation and civic management measures in the Charminar zone , one of the city’s most crowded religious and commercial areas. GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan conducted extensive field inspections on Wednesday to review preparedness and ensure cleanliness standards are maintained during the festive period.
Accompanied by Additional Commissioner Ravi Kiran , Zonal Commissioner Srinivas Reddy , and other senior officials, the Commissioner visited key locations including the Charminar , Mecca Masjid , and the Madina Building locality. These prominent religious, tourist, and commercial hubs witness heavy footfall throughout the year, with visitor numbers rising sharply during Ramadan due to evening markets, prayer gatherings, and festive shopping.
During the inspection, Karnan reviewed sanitation workforce deployment, route monitoring systems, road sweeping standards, and the frequency of cleaning operations. He directed officials to ensure timely removal of garbage from commercial establishments and market areas, noting that waste generation increases significantly during Ramadan. Special teams are to be deployed to keep major junctions, pedestrian pathways, and public congregation points clean at all times.
The Commissioner also instructed officials to undertake preventive desilting and cleaning of drainage channels to prevent sewage overflow, water stagnation, and foul odours. Stressing the importance of efficient supervision, he called for strengthening monitoring mechanisms at circle and zonal levels and recommended real-time monitoring of field staff attendance and performance to improve accountability.
Given the dense population, narrow lanes, and heavy pedestrian movement in the Old City, Karnan emphasized deploying additional sanitation personnel in high-footfall areas to ensure uninterrupted services. Officials were also asked to coordinate closely with field teams to respond quickly to sanitation complaints and maintain hygienic conditions throughout the festive period.
Appealing to citizens and business owners for cooperation, the Commissioner stressed that maintaining cleanliness is a shared responsibility. He urged shopkeepers to dispose of waste responsibly and residents to support GHMC efforts in keeping their surroundings clean.
Karnan reiterated that the intensified sanitation drive aims to provide a clean, safe, and hygienic environment for devotees, residents, and tourists during Ramadan, while reinforcing the city’s commitment to improved urban sanitation in high-density heritage zones.
