Goa Welcomes 46.39 Lakh Tourists in Five Months, Sustains Growth Beyond Record 2025
Goa's tourism industry has maintained its growth momentum in 2026 , welcoming more than 46.39 lakh visitors during the first five months of the year and reinforcing its status as one of India's most popular travel destinations . While the increase of 0.39 per cent over the corresponding period last year may seem modest, it comes after the state recorded a historic tourism performance in 2025, indicating that Goa is successfully sustaining growth from an already high base.
According to data released by the Goa Tourism Department , the state welcomed 46,39,165 tourists during the first five months of 2026, compared with 46.21 lakh during the corresponding period last year. Of the total arrivals, 44,37,018 were domestic tourists , while 2,02,147 were foreign visitors . The month of May alone recorded 9,69,090 tourist arrivals , marking a 4.53 per cent increase over May 2025.
Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte attributed the growth to strong connectivity, diversified tourism experiences and growing traveller confidence . While Goa's beaches remain its biggest attraction, tourists are increasingly exploring the state's heritage sites, spiritual destinations, wellness retreats, hinterland villages, cultural festivals and culinary experiences .
The latest performance builds on a remarkable five-year growth trajectory. Tourist arrivals rose from approximately 34.8 lakh in 2021 to 69.9 lakh in 2022 , 85 lakh in 2023 , and 1.04 crore in 2024 . In 2025, Goa crossed the one-crore tourist mark for the second consecutive year , registering a record 1.08 crore visitors , including more than 5.18 lakh foreign tourists .
A major factor behind the growth has been improved accessibility. Goa's dual-airport infrastructure comprising Dabolim Airport and Manohar International Airport at Mopa has expanded domestic and international connectivity, while charter flights and cruise tourism have further strengthened visitor inflows. The government's "Goa Beyond Beaches" strategy has also helped position the state as a year-round destination rather than a seasonal holiday hotspot.
Compared with other tourism destinations, Goa's performance remains significant. Kerala , which recorded more than 2.59 crore tourist arrivals in 2025 , posted growth of over 12 per cent , driven by wellness, backwater and eco-tourism segments. Meanwhile, Coorg (Kodagu) witnessed a decline in visitor arrivals, receiving around 43.6 lakh tourists in 2025 , down from the previous year. Despite growing competition from Kerala, Puducherry and other destinations, Goa has managed to maintain growth from a much larger tourism base.
The tourism boom has also translated into higher government revenues. Goa's excise collections increased from ₹515 crore in 2020-21 to nearly ₹948 crore in 2024-25 , reflecting rising economic activity linked to tourism, hospitality, nightlife and visitor spending. However, tourism growth has outpaced excise revenue growth, suggesting that visitors are increasingly spending on experiences beyond liquor and nightlife.
Tourism Director Kedar Naik said the steady rise in arrivals reflects the resilience of Goa's tourism sector and the success of efforts to diversify tourism offerings. Yet challenges remain, including improving foreign tourist arrivals, managing congestion during peak seasons and ensuring environmental sustainability.
With a strong domestic tourism base, growing cruise and event tourism, expanding hospitality investments and improved connectivity, Goa appears well-positioned for long-term growth. The latest figures indicate that the state's tourism story is no longer defined solely by beaches, but by its emergence as a multi-dimensional, year-round travel destination attracting visitors from across India and around the world.
