Government Plans Landmark Partition Memorial at Historic Sealdah Station

The Union Culture Ministry will build a memorial statue at Sealdah railway station in Kolkata to honour the countless people affected by the Partition of India, creating a permanent tribute at one of eastern India’s most significant transport hubs.

The announcement was made by Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat during a curtain-raiser event for this year’s Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, scheduled to be observed across the country from August 9 to 17. He said the Indian Railways has allotted space within the historic station premises for the installation of the memorial.

According to officials, the memorial is expected to be completed by November. It will take the form of an abstract sculpture, symbolising the grief, resilience and sacrifices of millions who endured the upheaval triggered by the Partition in 1947.

Sachchidanand Joshi, Member Secretary of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), said August 14 has been observed as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day for the past few years. This year, major commemorative programmes will be organised in Amritsar and Kolkata to mark the occasion.

Joshi explained that the Sealdah memorial will particularly acknowledge the experiences of families from West Bengal and East Pakistan, now Bangladesh, who were forced to abandon their homes and rebuild their lives after the division of the subcontinent.

India attained Independence in 1947, but the simultaneous Partition split the undivided provinces of Punjab and Bengal, triggering one of history’s largest mass migrations. Widespread communal violence claimed innumerable lives and displaced millions, leaving deep social and emotional scars that continue to resonate across generations.

The proposed memorial seeks to preserve these memories while reminding future generations of the human cost of Partition. By placing it at Sealdah, a station that witnessed the arrival of countless displaced families, the government hopes to create a powerful space for remembrance, reflection and historical awareness.
