Govt revokes detention of Sonam Wangchuk, signals de-escalation in Ladakh unrest
The Union Government on Saturday revoked the preventive detention of Ladakh-based climate activist Sonam Wangchuk under the National Security Act (NSA) , nearly six months after his arrest following violent protests in Leh . He was subsequently released from Jodhpur Central Jail at around 1:30 pm , after formalities were completed by his wife, Geetanjali Angmo , officials said.
Wangchuk had been detained on September 26, 2025 , two days after large-scale demonstrations over demands for statehood for Ladakh and inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution turned violent. The unrest reportedly left four people dead and more than 45 injured , including 22 police personnel. Authorities invoked the NSA on the orders of the Leh District Magistrate to maintain public order and later shifted him to a prison in Rajasthan.
In a statement, the Centre said the decision to revoke the detention was aimed at fostering peace, stability, and mutual trust in Ladakh and enabling constructive dialogue with stakeholders. Officials noted that prolonged strikes and protests had disrupted education, employment, tourism, business activity, and the regional economy . Wangchuk had already completed nearly half of the maximum detention period permitted under the Act.
The government reiterated its commitment to addressing Ladakh’s concerns through engagement with community leaders and a High-Powered Committee constituted for the purpose. Key regional groups, including the Leh Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance , had also demanded his release.
The move came days after the Supreme Court adjourned hearing on a petition filed by Wangchuk’s wife challenging his detention. Shortly before his release, the activist reaffirmed his commitment to peaceful dialogue for Ladakh’s long-term protection and dignity.
