As Kerala prepares for its biggest cultural festival, the state government has unveiled an extensive plan to ensure that Onam 2026 is celebrated on a grand scale while safeguarding consumers from festive-season inflation. The decisions were taken at a high-level review meeting chaired by Chief Minister V D Satheesan at the State Secretariat, where officials assessed preparations across departments and finalized measures aimed at balancing celebration, affordability and sustainability.

The government has announced a series of interventions to prevent artificial price hikes in essential commodities during the festival season, a period traditionally marked by heightened consumer spending and increased demand for food items. Authorities will implement daily market monitoring to closely track the prices of staples such as rice, pulses, sugar, vegetables, edible oils, meat and fish . If abnormal price increases are detected, special enforcement squads led by the Revenue and Police departments will conduct inspections across the state and take action against hoarding, black marketing and profiteering.

To provide relief to households, the state will organize Onam fairs at the state and district levels , along with trade fairs where essential commodities will be sold at subsidized rates. These government-backed markets are expected to help stabilize prices and ensure affordable access to daily necessities during the festive period.

The focus on price control comes as Onam remains one of Kerala's most significant economic events. The festival generates substantial business for retailers, textile merchants, jewellery stores, food producers, transport operators, hotels and tourism stakeholders , with seasonal trade running into thousands of crores of rupees. Officials believe the combination of discounted fairs and strict market surveillance will support consumer confidence while boosting economic activity.

The celebrations will be conducted under the theme "Puthuyuga Kerala" (New Era Kerala) , reflecting the state's development vision. Government departments participating in the concluding Onam procession will showcase floats highlighting achievements in infrastructure, healthcare, education, digital governance, tourism and sustainability . The Chief Minister has also directed departments to maximize sponsorship support to meet festival expenses and reduce the burden on the state exchequer.

In keeping with Kerala's environmental commitments, all events will follow the state's Green Protocol , promoting reduced plastic use, waste segregation, recycling and eco-friendly decorations. The initiative reinforces Kerala's reputation as a leader in sustainable public celebrations.

The ten-day festival will commence with Atham on August 16 and culminate with Thiruvonam on August 26 . Celebrated in honour of the legendary King Mahabali , Onam symbolizes prosperity, equality and communal harmony. Traditional attractions such as Pookkalam floral carpets, Onasadya feasts, Vallam Kali boat races, Pulikali performances and cultural programmes are expected to attract thousands of visitors from across India and abroad.

With stringent anti-profiteering measures, consumer-friendly initiatives and a vibrant cultural agenda, Kerala is aiming to make Onam 2026 both affordable and memorable for millions of residents and tourists alike.
