As the Goods and Services Tax (GST) completes nine years , the Directorate General of Taxpayer Services (DGTS) is commemorating the milestone with a "GST Awareness & Overview" seminar in Ahmedabad on June 30, organized in collaboration with JG University . GST, introduced on July 1, 2017 , was enabled by the 101st Constitutional Amendment Act, 2016 , which paved the way for a unified indirect tax system by empowering both the Centre and the states to levy GST under a common framework.

Launched on July 1, 2017 , GST unified multiple central and state indirect taxes into a single tax regime , creating a common national market. Over the past nine years, it has simplified indirect taxation, improved transparency, strengthened digital compliance, expanded the tax base, and enhanced the ease of doing business through technology-driven processes.

The seminar will provide participants with an overview of the GST framework, recent policy and procedural developments, compliance requirements, taxpayer rights and obligations, and the government's latest taxpayer facilitation initiatives.

The event will be addressed by Shri Sumit Kumar, IRS , Principal Additional Director General, DGTS Ahmedabad Zonal Unit , who will discuss GST's evolution and the Directorate's role in promoting taxpayer awareness, grievance redressal, stakeholder consultations, and voluntary compliance.

According to the Ministry of Finance , the programme also highlights the collaborative role of taxpayers, businesses, industry, and tax professionals in strengthening the GST ecosystem and improving tax administration.

Established in 2015 under the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), DGTS focuses on taxpayer education and facilitation. The Ahmedabad Zonal Unit, covering Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, and Daman & Diu, conducted over 100 outreach programmes in the past year, reaching more than 1.5 lakh taxpayers .

The initiative reaffirms the government's commitment to a transparent, technology-driven, and taxpayer-centric GST regime while encouraging greater awareness and voluntary compliance.
