Grand Theft Auto 6 is reportedly giving its crime economy a major overhaul, making money management, robberies and stolen goods a more strategic part of the adventure.

According to newly reported preview details, players will deal with three forms of wealth: banked money, physical cash and the value of loot carried in duffel bags. Banked funds are reportedly safe, while cash carried by Jason or Lucia can be lost after death and must be deposited at an ATM. Stolen valuables, meanwhile, will need to be taken to the appropriate fence before they can be converted into usable money.

The game is expected to feature a broad range of free-roam robberies, from convenience stores, gas stations and payday-loan outlets to jewellery stores, banks and criminal compounds. Some smaller opportunities may not appear on the map, encouraging players to explore. Larger jobs can reportedly be highlighted with estimated payouts, while tips from NPCs, story characters and favors can reveal additional targets.

Robberies could also play out differently depending on NPC behaviour, security cameras, safe combinations and escape routes. Civilians and security personnel may fight back, while safes can require codes discovered through exploration or information from contacts.

Loot will reportedly include drugs, jewellery and vehicles, with different fences handling different goods. Some stolen vehicles can eventually be registered as personal vehicles for a fee, while garages increase vehicle storage.

Most significantly, making money through free-roam crime is reportedly tied to story progression. At certain points, Jason and Lucia may need to raise specific amounts before the narrative continues, encouraging players to decide how they want to earn it.

Rockstar has acknowledged that GTA 5 eventually gave players more money than they had meaningful ways to spend. GTA 6's redesigned economy aims to address that issue, although some major spending options remain secret.

GTA 6 is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
