Gujarat Farmers Protest On Land Acquisition For Electric Poles With Tractor Rally
Hundreds of farmers from across Gujarat took out a tractor rally on Monday, protesting against the alleged forced land acquisition for installing electricity transmission poles and high-voltage power lines across agricultural fields.
The protest, named the Kisan Adhikar Yatra , began from Shantipura Chowkdi in Ahmedabad and moved towards Gandhinagar , the state capital. Organisers said around 1,111 tractors were expected to join the mobilisation, with participation from multiple districts including Saurashtra, South Gujarat, Kutch, and North Gujarat.
Farmers also carried ploughs as symbolic protest tools , highlighting their dependence on agriculture and opposition to infrastructure projects they say are being implemented without consent or fair compensation. According to organisers, the agitation is focused on the installation of transmission lines and electric poles by private and public power entities across fertile farmland.
The rally has been jointly organised by the Congress-led Gujarat Congress Kisan Cell and various farmers’ organisations, with support from the Aam Aadmi Party .
Congress leaders including Amit Chavda and Tushar Chaudhary alleged that farmers are facing exploitation, citing issues such as lack of compensation for crop damage, inadequate procurement at minimum support price, rising input costs, and what they described as coercive installation of power infrastructure.
They further claimed that farmers are also demanding loan waivers , full support price guarantees, and fair rehabilitation mechanisms for land used in public utility projects.
AAP leader Isudan Gadhvi said his party stands with farmers, calling the rally a non-partisan movement for agricultural rights and justice.
Police maintained a strict security presence along the route as the convoy proceeded towards Gandhinagar, where a farmers’ meeting has been planned to present their demands to the state government.
