H1N1 Cases Rise in Delhi, CM Orders Emergency Health Review

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has called an emergency review meeting amid a rise in influenza cases in the national capital, with the city reporting around 3,000 influenza infections this year, including 2,308 cases of H1N1.

Delhi Health Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh said the situation remained under control and assured residents that hospitals had adequate doctors, medical staff and medicines to deal with the cases. He made the remarks at a press conference following a review meeting with senior officials from the Health Department, MCD, NDMC and the Delhi Cantonment Board.

The meeting assessed Delhi’s preparedness to manage H1N1, seasonal influenza and vector-borne diseases. Singh said there was no shortage of healthcare personnel or medicines and urged people not to panic.

“Patients are coming, but they are getting treated and then going back,” the minister said, adding that isolation wards have been created in every hospital. He also warned that action would be taken against hospitals if patients requiring admission were denied beds.

Of the approximately 3,000 influenza cases reported in Delhi this year, 2,308 are H1N1 infections, making the strain responsible for the overwhelming majority of reported cases. The remaining infections involve other influenza strains.

H1N1, commonly known as swine flu, is a respiratory infection that can cause symptoms including fever, cough, sore throat, headache, body aches and fatigue. While many patients recover with appropriate treatment, certain symptoms can indicate a need for urgent medical attention.

Health authorities have advised people experiencing persistent high fever, breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion or worsening symptoms to seek medical care promptly.

The emergency review is aimed at ensuring hospitals remain prepared to manage any further increase in influenza cases while maintaining adequate beds, medicines and healthcare staff across the capital.
