
Heavy Overnight Rain Batters Mumbai, Mulund Records 160 mm in Four Hours
Mumbai witnessed an intense spell of overnight monsoon rain on Monday, with several suburban areas receiving more than 100 mm of rainfall in just four hours , resulting in waterlogging and temporary traffic disruptions across key roads.
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) , Veena Nagar in Mulund recorded the city's highest rainfall at 160.4 mm , while Versova received 156.8 mm between midnight and 4 a.m. The heavy downpour led to water accumulation on LBS Road in Mulund and the Andheri subway, slowing vehicular movement before civic authorities restored normal traffic.
Rain gauges across the eastern suburbs recorded exceptionally high precipitation, with Maharashtra Nagar School in Mankhurd registering 123.4 mm , followed by Paspoli Municipal School in Powai (122 mm), Mithagar Municipal School in Mulund (120.8 mm) and the S Ward office (120.6 mm).
In the western suburbs, the Versova pumping station logged 121.6 mm of rain, while the Marol fire station (108.4 mm), Pratiksha Nagar Municipal School in Oshiwara (108 mm) and Malpa Dongari Municipal School in Andheri (104 mm) also reported heavy rainfall.
The island city experienced comparatively lighter showers, with Matunga recording the highest rainfall at 53.4 mm , followed by Rawali Camp (46.72 mm) and Dadar fire station (45.6 mm).
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms over Mumbai and its suburbs through the day. A yellow alert remains in force until July 2, with the weather agency cautioning residents about isolated heavy showers, lightning and gusty winds as active monsoon conditions continue.
