Heavy Rain Brings Relief to Hyderabad After Nearly Three Months, Triggers Traffic Chaos
After a prolonged spell of dry weather, Hyderabad received widespread rainfall on Friday evening, bringing much-needed relief from the heat and humidity. Several parts of the city experienced moderate to heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. However, the sudden downpour disrupted traffic movement and caused waterlogging in low-lying areas.
Ameerpet, Madhapur, Gachibowli, Mehdipatnam, Attapur, Rajendranagar, Koti and Abids were among the areas that received rainfall. The showers coincided with evening peak hours, leaving commuters struggling to navigate waterlogged roads and congested junctions.
Heavy rainfall was reported around Praja Bhavan. Water accumulated at the Malakpet Road Under Bridge (RUB) on the route towards Chaderghat X Roads, prompting traffic police personnel from Malakpet to reach the spot, monitor the situation and assist motorists.
Traffic movement also slowed in Gachibowli, Madhapur, Ameerpet and Begumpet. Meanwhile, waterlogging near the Agrasen Island bus stop triggered a major traffic jam. Vehicles travelling from KBR Park and Basavatarakam Hospital towards Agrasen Island faced delays.
Traffic police advised motorists to drive cautiously, follow traffic instructions and cooperate with personnel deployed at busy junctions.
The latest spell marks the first widespread rainfall with intense thunderstorms and lightning in Hyderabad since August 4. Several locations recorded heavy precipitation, with some areas receiving more than 100 mm.
According to rainfall data, Keesara recorded the highest rainfall at 108.8 mm, followed by Bahadurpura (82.3 mm), Madhapur (73.5 mm), Shaikpet (66.8 mm), Charminar (63.5 mm) and Kukatpally (61.5 mm).
Khairatabad recorded 60 mm, Asifnagar 58.3 mm, Medipally 58 mm, Borabanda 56.5 mm and Gachibowli 50.5 mm. Alkapuri, Manikonda and Moula Ali received around 48.5 mm, while Attapur recorded 44.5 mm and Banjara Hills 44.3 mm. Other areas received between 15 mm and 40 mm.
While the rain offered welcome relief, waterlogging and traffic congestion once again exposed the city's challenges in handling heavy downpours.
