Hezly Rivera Stages Stunning Comeback to Claim Back-to-Back US Gymnastics Titles

Hezly Rivera is quickly establishing herself as one of the leading faces of the next generation of US women’s gymnastics.

The 18-year-old Olympic champion produced a remarkable comeback on Sunday to win her second consecutive US national title, overcoming a difficult start and finishing more than a point ahead of runner-up Claire Pease.

Rivera posted a two-day total of 111.950, becoming the first American woman other than Simone Biles to win back-to-back national titles since Jordyn Wieber achieved the feat in 2010 and 2011.

Her victory was particularly impressive given the setback she endured earlier in the competition. Rivera entered the final day in fourth place after falling face-first onto the mat during her uneven bars routine on Thursday.

Instead of allowing the mistake to derail her campaign, Rivera responded with four composed performances. She began Sunday on the uneven bars, battling through a small stall before sticking her dismount, albeit with a minor step. Her 13.850 score gave her the platform to build momentum.

As the competition progressed, Rivera looked increasingly assured, carrying herself with the composure of a seasoned veteran despite being only 18.

Pease, who led with two rotations remaining, ultimately could not match Rivera's consistency. Her floor routine included an out-of-bounds landing and another tumbling sequence that resulted in a penalty. Nevertheless, her second-place finish represented a major improvement over last year's 10th-place result and strengthened her prospects of making the US team for the world championships in the Netherlands in October.

Skye Blakely, who shared the opening-day lead, slipped to seventh after costly mistakes on the floor. Charleigh Bullock, 16, finished third, followed by Reese Esponda in fourth.

Two-time Olympic champion Jade Carey placed fifth as she continues increasing the difficulty of her routines while targeting a third Olympic appearance.

With Biles and Suni Lee still away from regular competition, Rivera's continued rise gives the US women's programme another compelling young star to build around.
