History Made! India Claims Maiden Historic AVC Volleyball Cup Bronze, Jumps to World No. 42
India has scripted one of the biggest moments in its volleyball history. The men's national team secured the country's first ever bronze medal at the AVC Men's Volleyball Cup 2026 , achieving a milestone that could reshape the future of the sport in the country.
The historic achievement was celebrated in Gandhinagar , where Union Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya felicitated the Indian contingent and praised the players for delivering a breakthrough performance on home soil. Calling the medal a proud moment for Indian sports, he said it should serve as the beginning of a bigger journey rather than the final destination.
The 2026 AVC Men's Volleyball Cup was significant in more ways than one. It marked the first time India hosted the prestigious continental tournament , and the hosts made the most of the opportunity with a remarkable campaign. The Indian team remained unbeaten throughout the pool stage , displaying consistency, resilience and confidence against some of Asia's strongest volleyball nations.
India capped off its impressive run by defeating Bahrain 3-1 in the third place playoff, clinching the bronze medal and recording the country's best ever finish in the tournament's history .
The achievement also translated into a major boost on the global stage. Thanks to the valuable ranking points earned during the tournament, the Indian men's volleyball team jumped 18 places in the FIVB World Rankings , rising from World No. 60 to World No. 42 . It is one of the biggest ranking improvements for the team in recent years and reflects the steady progress Indian volleyball has made.
Addressing the players, Dr. Mandaviya said every success brings greater expectations and reaffirmed the government's commitment to strengthening India's sporting ecosystem. He highlighted efforts to improve athlete development through long term planning, sports science, talent identification, better infrastructure and greater international exposure, with the aim of helping Indian athletes consistently compete among the world's best.
The Indian contingent, led by captain Jerome Vinith Charles and coached by Dragan Mihailovic of Serbia , credited the support system behind the team for their success. Charles thanked the Government of India for providing world class training facilities, recovery support and an environment that allowed the players to focus entirely on their performance.
He also dedicated the historic medal to Indian fans, saying their constant encouragement throughout the tournament inspired the team to fight for every point.
Head coach Dragan Mihailovic expressed confidence that India's investment in sports and athlete welfare is creating the foundation for sustained international success. According to him, if the current momentum continues, Indian teams can regularly challenge for podium finishes at major global competitions.
Beyond the medal itself, India's campaign has given volleyball a fresh wave of attention in a country where sports are often dominated by cricket. Successfully hosting a major Asian championship while simultaneously delivering the nation's best ever performance has demonstrated both India's growing organisational capability and its improving competitiveness on the international volleyball stage.
For Indian volleyball, this bronze medal is far more than a podium finish. It is a statement that years of investment, preparation and belief are beginning to bear fruit. If this momentum is sustained, the achievement in Gandhinagar could well be remembered as the moment Indian volleyball announced its arrival among Asia's elite.
