Hoax Bomb Threat Triggers High Alert at Delhi's Red Fort

A bomb threat targeting Delhi's iconic Red Fort triggered a massive security operation on Saturday , prompting police to tighten security around the historic monument and conduct an extensive search before declaring the alert a hoax . The incident, however, has once again highlighted the growing challenge posed by fake bomb threats in India, particularly against high-profile public landmarks and critical infrastructure.

According to police sources, the threat originated from a phone call to the Mumbai Police control room , where the caller claimed that the Red Fort would be blown up. The information was immediately relayed to the Delhi Police control room , which alerted the district police and other security agencies. Acting swiftly, authorities deployed bomb disposal squads, dog squads and additional security personnel , while intensifying surveillance in and around the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Security teams carried out a thorough search of the monument and its surrounding areas for several hours. After an exhaustive inspection, officials confirmed that no explosive or suspicious object had been found and declared the threat to be a false alarm . Investigators are now working to identify the caller, analyse technical evidence and establish the motive behind issuing the fake threat.

The threat was treated with utmost seriousness as it comes less than eight months after the November 2025 vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) blast near the Red Fort Metro Station , which killed 15 people and injured more than 20 others . The attack, investigated under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) , led to a significant overhaul of security arrangements around the Red Fort, making every subsequent threat a matter of national security rather than routine policing.

Saturday's incident also fits into a broader pattern of rising hoax bomb threats across the country. Earlier this year, the Red Fort, Delhi Secretariat, Delhi Assembly and several schools in the national capital received bomb threat emails that were later declared hoaxes after extensive searches. More recently, ISRO Headquarters in Bengaluru , the Udupi District Court in Karnataka and Jaipur's Regional Transport Office (RTO) were also targeted by fake bomb threats, triggering evacuations and large-scale security checks.

The trend is part of a nationwide surge in hoax threats that has persisted since 2024 , when coordinated bomb threat emails targeted more than 200 schools in Delhi-NCR and over 30 airports across India. Since then, hundreds of similar threats have been reported at schools, hospitals, courts, government offices, commercial flights and other public institutions , forcing authorities to deploy bomb disposal squads, forensic experts and police personnel to verify each alert.

Security agencies say many perpetrators use anonymous email accounts, Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), encrypted communication platforms and foreign IP addresses to conceal their identities, making investigations increasingly complex. Consequently, every threat whether genuine or fake is treated as credible until exhaustive searches rule out any danger.

Officials stressed that the Red Fort , which serves as the venue for the Prime Minister's Independence Day address every year, remains one of India's most sensitive and heavily guarded monuments. They reiterated that issuing false bomb threats is a serious criminal offence, as such hoaxes not only create public panic but also divert critical security resources from genuine emergencies. Police are continuing their investigation to trace the caller responsible for Saturday's threat and determine the intent behind the incident.
