Hodgkinson vs Werro: Women’s 800m Takes Centre Stage at Historic Birmingham Championships

The women’s 800 metres is set to provide one of the biggest highlights of the European Athletics Championships as Britain stages the continental track and field showpiece for the first time.

The spotlight will fall on Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson, Swiss sensation Audrey Werro and Dutch star Femke Broeders-Bol, who has made an impressive transition from the 400m hurdles to the two-lap race.

Werro, 22, has emerged as one of the most exciting middle-distance runners in Europe. She clocked 1:53.80 in late June, making her the third-fastest woman in history and putting her within striking distance of the 800m world record of 1:53.28, set by Jarmila Kratochvilova in 1983.

The Swiss athlete, known for celebrating victories with a lion’s roar, said her immediate target was a medal rather than chasing the world record.

Hodgkinson, meanwhile, arrives as the reigning Olympic champion and will be looking to underline her status on home soil. The highly anticipated final is scheduled for Friday night.

The championships will also feature some of the biggest names in athletics. Swedish pole vault superstar Armand “Mondo” Duplantis, the two-time reigning Olympic champion, is returning after a thigh problem and has made no secret of his desire to add another world record to his remarkable collection.

Norwegian distance star Jakob Ingebrigtsen will also make his comeback from Achilles surgery in the men’s 5,000m on Monday. The two-time Olympic champion has won both the 1,500m and 5,000m at the last three European championships, although he did not enter in the 1,500m this time.

The Birmingham championships, running from August 10 to 16, mark the first time Britain has hosted the European Athletics Championships. Around 1,600 athletes from 49 member federations are expected to compete.

Adding another incentive, European Athletics will award €50,000 performance bonuses to the 10 highest-scoring performances across five event groups.

With Olympic champions, record chasers and emerging stars converging on Alexander Stadium, Birmingham is set for a week in which European athletics takes centre stage.
