‘Hopeful of Justice’: Zubeen Garg’s Family Awaits Outcome as Court Proceedings Continue
The investigation into the death of renowned Assamese singer Zubeen Garg is progressing steadily, with his family expressing confidence that the ongoing legal process will lead to a positive outcome.
Garg's wife Garima Saikia Garg said on Saturday that while the matter is currently under judicial consideration and she could not comment on the details, the proceedings appeared to be moving in the appropriate direction. She added that the family has full faith in the country's legal system.
The case continues to remain under the scrutiny of a fast-track court in Guwahati. Two prominent accused in the case, event organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta and Garg's manager Siddhartha Sharma have approached the Supreme Court seeking bail, exercising their legal rights, according to Saikia Garg.
The singer-composer died on September 19, 2025 , after drowning near Lazarus Island, Singapore , a day before his scheduled performance at the North East India Festival . While the Singapore Police found no evidence of foul play , the Assam CID’s SIT continued its independent probe and later filed a chargesheet naming seven accused , with four facing murder charges .
The SIT later submitted a chargesheet before a local court, naming seven accused , with four facing murder-related charges . Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had earlier described the incident as a case of "plain and simple murder". However, Singapore authorities, who conducted a separate investigation, found no evidence suggesting foul play. Assam authorities have maintained that the state investigation will continue independently.
Meanwhile, Saikia Garg said preparations are underway to establish a trust in her husband's name to preserve and promote his artistic legacy. The proposed initiative will include an office and museum at Chenikuthi in Guwahati, though the process is awaiting completion of legal formalities, including the succession certificate.
She also said efforts through the Kalaguru Artistes Foundation , founded by Garg, will continue to support cultural activities. The family hopes that future generations will carry forward not only his music but also his ideals and contributions to society.
