Hyderabad’s IMAX Comeback Sparks Frenzy as Suniel Narang Teases Big Reveal
Hyderabad may soon witness the return of the IMAX experience , more than a decade after the city lost its iconic large-format screenings. Film exhibitor and distributor Suniel Narang recently revealed in an interview that his group is working on launching a certified IMAX screen in the city, with an official announcement expected within the next four to five days.
The development has sparked excitement among movie lovers and cinema fans across Telangana, especially amid speculation that the legendary Sudarshan 70MM theatre at RTC X Roads could be transformed into the new IMAX venue. While there has been no official confirmation regarding the location, discussions online have already intensified.
Hyderabad was once home to one of India’s most celebrated IMAX screens at Prasads Multiplex . However, the theatre stopped screening IMAX films in 2014 following contract-related issues, leaving audiences without a true IMAX experience for years. During its peak, the venue attracted massive crowds for Hollywood blockbusters such as The Dark Knight and Interstellar , becoming a landmark destination for film enthusiasts.
The renewed buzz around IMAX’s return also comes at a time when anticipation is growing for filmmaker SS Rajamouli’s upcoming project SSMB29 starring Mahesh Babu . Industry circles and fans have linked the timing of the proposed IMAX launch to the expected demand for large-format cinematic experiences once the film releases.
Adding to the speculation are rumours of Mahesh Babu’s possible association with the project, though no official details have been announced yet.
If confirmed, the return of a certified IMAX screen could mark a major milestone for Hyderabad’s exhibition sector and revive the city’s long-standing reputation as a hub for premium cinematic experiences.
