US President Donald Trump has stepped up his campaign for the Nobel Peace Prize, claiming he has settled eight wars and arguing that failing to recognise his efforts would be a “great discredit” to the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

Speaking to reporters at the Oval Office on Wednesday, Trump said he had achieved more in resolving conflicts than previous US presidents.

“I’ve done stuff that nobody else has ever done. I’m not bragging, I’m just telling you the facts. No president has probably ever settled any wars. I settled eight wars,” Trump said.

Trump has repeatedly claimed credit for helping end or prevent conflicts since returning to the White House in January 2025. The conflicts he has cited include India-Pakistan, Israel-Hamas, Israel-Iran, Cambodia-Thailand, Serbia-Kosovo, Rwanda-Democratic Republic of Congo, Armenia-Azerbaijan, and Egypt-Ethiopia.

However, his description of the conflicts as “settled” has been disputed. India has rejected Trump's repeated claim that Washington brokered the May 2025 ceasefire with Pakistan, saying the understanding was reached directly between the two countries. Fighting or tensions have also resurfaced in some of the other conflicts Trump cites, while Russia's war in Ukraine remains unresolved.

Trump said his diplomatic efforts were continuing and suggested another conflict could soon be added to his list. His remarks appeared to refer to the US-Iran war, which has entered its eighth month and has yet to produce a lasting peace agreement.

Trump also pointed to the support he says he received from Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, who won the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize. Machado handed Trump her Nobel medal during a White House visit in January, an act Trump has repeatedly cited as evidence that she believed he deserved the award.

The US president also compared himself with former President Barack Obama, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009, saying Obama had done little to warrant the honour.

Trump's latest appeal comes just one day before the Norwegian Nobel Committee announces the 2026 Peace Prize in Oslo on Friday. The committee has received 287 nominations, 208 individuals and 79 organisations although the identities of nominees are kept secret for 50 years.

Leaders of Cambodia, Israel and Pakistan have publicly said they nominated Trump, but those nominations cannot be independently verified. Other names being discussed by analysts include Pope Leo, the International Criminal Court and the UN special rapporteur for the Palestinian territories.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has said it is closely watching efforts to build peace and new forms of international cooperation as the global order undergoes major changes. The winner will be announced at 11 am CEST on October 9.
