IAF Airlifts Sacred Buddha Relics to Mongolia in Cultural Outreach Mission
The Indian Air Force (IAF) has transported the sacred relics of Lord Buddha from Delhi to Mongolia aboard its IL-76 strategic airlift aircraft, Gajraj , in a mission aimed at strengthening cultural ties between the two countries.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the aircraft undertook an overnight flight on May 30 and landed in Mongolia at 11:25 a.m. IST. The operation was carried out in support of India’s efforts to deepen engagement with friendly nations through cultural and civilizational exchanges .
The ministry said the mission reflects the IAF’s capability to support national objectives beyond conventional military roles while contributing to India’s global cultural outreach initiatives .
The transportation of the revered Buddhist relics carries particular significance given the deep historical and spiritual links between India and Mongolia. As the birthplace of Buddhism , India has increasingly leveraged its Buddhist heritage to strengthen relations with countries across Asia where the faith remains a vital part of cultural identity.
Analysts view such initiatives as an important component of cultural diplomacy , helping foster goodwill and people-to-people connections that complement traditional diplomatic and strategic partnerships. By sharing sacred relics and promoting Buddhist heritage, India reinforces its image as a custodian of one of the world’s most influential spiritual traditions.
The mission also highlights how Buddhist heritage serves as a pillar of India’s soft power in Asia , enabling New Delhi to build deeper cultural engagement with nations such as Mongolia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Japan that share historical ties to the faith.
Officials said the airlift underscores India’s commitment to preserving and promoting its civilizational legacy while strengthening international friendships through cultural exchange and shared heritage .
