IAF's IL-76MD Aircraft Makes World's Highest-Altitude Landing At Ladakh's Nyoma Airbase

An Indian Air Force (IAF) IL-76MD transport aircraft of Russian origin has successfully landed at the Nyoma airbase in eastern Ladakh, achieving what the force described as the highest-altitude landing ever recorded by the aircraft anywhere in the world.

The historic touchdown marks a significant milestone in India's military aviation capabilities, particularly in operating heavy transport aircraft at extreme altitudes.

Situated at approximately 13,000 feet above sea level, Nyoma airbase is located around 25 km from the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China, making it strategically important for India's military operations along the border.

The IAF announced the achievement in a social media post on Saturday, describing the landing as a landmark moment for the force.

"An Indian Air Force IL-76MD has scripted history with a successful landing at Nyoma, marking the highest-altitude landing ever achieved by the aircraft anywhere in the world," the IAF said.

The force also highlighted the aircraft's operational capabilities and commended the crew for executing the challenging landing.

It described the achievement as a demonstration of the aircraft's enduring capabilities, supported by the exceptional skill, precision and professionalism of its crew.

The IAF further termed the touchdown a milestone that reinforces India's strategic airlift capability.
