IBM-Backed Quantum Innovation Hub Begins Operations in Amaravati

Andhra Pradesh's ambitious Quantum Valley project moved from planning to execution on Thursday with the commencement of operations at the Amaravati Quantum and Artificial Intelligence Innovation Centre . Established in collaboration with IBM , the centre will connect industry, academia, and global experts to develop real-world applications in quantum computing and artificial intelligence while laying the foundation for the state's broader quantum ecosystem.

The launch marks a significant milestone in the government's efforts to position Andhra Pradesh as a leading destination for deep-tech innovation and advanced research. The newly operational centre forms part of the larger Amaravati Quantum Valley initiative, which aims to create a globally competitive ecosystem for quantum technologies, artificial intelligence, and next-generation computing.

Unlike a conventional research facility, the centre has been designed as a collaborative platform where industries, educational institutions, and technology experts work together to address real-world challenges. Under its operating model, companies and industrial partners will present complex technological problems, while professors, researchers, and students will develop solutions using advanced quantum algorithms and AI-driven tools. Global experts will provide mentorship and technical guidance to help transform research outcomes into commercially viable applications.

A key strength of the initiative is its partnership with IBM , one of the world's leading quantum computing companies. Through the collaboration, students and researchers will gain access to Qiskit , IBM's globally recognised open-source quantum software development framework. The company will also provide internationally recognised certification pathways, specialised training programmes, and mentorship from its scientists and technology experts, enabling local talent to acquire skills aligned with global industry standards.

The centre's launch comes as Andhra Pradesh expands its role in India's emerging quantum technology landscape. Earlier this year, the state approved the Amaravati Quantum Computing Centre (AQCC) and announced plans to host an IBM Quantum Innovation Centre , making it part of IBM's global quantum ecosystem. The broader Quantum Valley project, being developed with support from IBM and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) , is expected to host India's largest quantum computing infrastructure in the coming years.

One of the most notable aspects of the initiative is its statewide talent network. The government has already established 380 Quantum Innovation Cells across engineering colleges in Andhra Pradesh, bringing together more than 3,000 professors and students . This network is expected to serve as a powerful innovation engine, fostering research, intellectual property creation, and industry-focused technology development.

Experts believe the technologies emerging from the centre could transform sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, manufacturing, logistics, energy, and financial services . Applications ranging from drug discovery and climate forecasting to supply-chain optimisation and cybersecurity are expected to benefit from advances in quantum computing and artificial intelligence.

With operations now underway at the innovation centre, Andhra Pradesh has taken a concrete step toward realizing its Quantum Valley vision.
