‘If GDP Is So Strong, Why Ask People To Be Frugal?’: Raja Warring Questions PM Modi

Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring on Tuesday questioned the Narendra Modi government over the benefits of India’s 7.8 per cent GDP growth, arguing that the headline economic numbers meant little to millions of people still struggling with rising living costs and unemployment.

Warring’s remarks came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the 7.8 per cent growth rate, describing it as particularly significant at a time when the global economy is facing geopolitical conflicts, supply-chain disruptions and wider uncertainty.

The Punjab Congress chief, however, said strong GDP figures alone could not be a measure of economic well-being if their benefits were not reaching ordinary households.

“There is no point in celebrating the GDP statistics when these do not help people on the ground,” Warring said, alleging that the common man continued to face high inflation and unemployment.

He also questioned the government's repeated appeals for people to be financially cautious. Warring asked why citizens were being urged to cut back on spending, including advice against buying gold or travelling abroad, if the economy was performing as strongly as the government claimed.

According to Warring, the GDP figures may generate positive headlines, but they do not necessarily reflect the financial pressures being experienced by ordinary families.

He pointed to the prices of essential commodities and petroleum products such as petrol, diesel and LPG, saying their costs have remained a major burden on households. He argued that changes in fuel prices have a direct or indirect impact on almost every Indian because of their effect on transportation and the cost of goods and services.

Warring urged the Prime Minister to ensure that economic growth translated into tangible relief for citizens.

“Let the common man also have a feel of what the 7.8 per cent GDP mean to him,” he said, calling for a reduction in petroleum prices.

His criticism comes amid a wider debate over whether India's strong headline growth is being adequately reflected in household incomes, employment opportunities and everyday purchasing power.
