IIT (ISM) Unveils Ultra-Compact Antenna for Next-Gen Medical Wearables

As healthcare increasingly shifts towards real-time patient monitoring and connected medical devices, researchers at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad have developed an ultra-compact wearable antenna that could significantly improve the performance of future healthcare technologies, smart wearables and wireless communication systems. Combining miniature size with high-speed connectivity, wider wireless coverage and enhanced user safety, the innovation addresses one of the biggest engineering challenges in wearable electronics.

Developed by Prof. Ravi Kumar Gangwar and research scholar Nibash Kumar Sahu from the institute's Department of Electronics Engineering, the antenna measures just 5 × 5 × 0.75 mm smaller than a fingernail. Despite its tiny dimensions, it delivers high-speed data transmission and reliable wireless performance, making it suitable for Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) that connect wearable medical sensors, fitness trackers and other smart devices.

The research has been published in the prestigious IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques, highlighting its scientific significance. Unlike conventional antennas, wearable antennas must function efficiently while being placed close to the human body, where body movement, tissue absorption and limited device space often weaken signal quality. The IIT (ISM) team's design overcomes these challenges without compromising performance.

The antenna operates on dual frequency bands. One ensures stable communication among devices worn on different parts of the body, while the other enables faster transmission of health data to smartphones, computers or cloud-based healthcare platforms over longer distances. Researchers also reported a low Specific Absorption Rate (SAR), indicating that only a minimal amount of electromagnetic energy is absorbed by the body, making the antenna safer for prolonged use.

Importantly, the fabricated prototype closely matched simulation results, demonstrating that the design is practical for real-world deployment rather than remaining a laboratory concept.

" Wearable technologies are becoming an integral part of healthcare and everyday life. Our goal was to develop a compact antenna that offers high data rates, wider coverage and safe operation without compromising performance," Prof. Gangwar said. He added that the technology could support applications ranging from remote patient monitoring to advanced wireless healthcare devices.

Experts believe the breakthrough could accelerate the development of smaller, lighter and more efficient wearables, including ECG patches, continuous glucose monitors, smart clothing and fitness trackers. Beyond healthcare, the technology also holds promise for sports analytics, industrial safety systems, military wearables, smart textiles, and future 5G and 6G communication networks. As the global wearable technology market continues to expand, the indigenous innovation from IIT (ISM) could play an important role in advancing India's capabilities in digital healthcare, Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) and next-generation wireless communication.
