IMD Issues Red Alert for Three Kerala Districts as Extremely Heavy Rain Threat Looms

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday issued a red alert for three districts in Kerala, warning of the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 20.4 cm .

The red alert has been issued for Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad districts, indicating a high risk of intense rainfall activity. The IMD also issued an orange alert for Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kannur and Kasaragod , where very heavy rainfall between 11.5 cm and 20.4 cm is expected.

A yellow alert was issued for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha and Kottayam districts, with forecasts of heavy rainfall between 6.5 cm and 11.5 cm .

For Thursday, the weather department has issued a yellow alert for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts.

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) cautioned that the heavy rainfall could lead to landslides, mudslides, flash floods and waterlogging , especially in hilly regions and low-lying areas. Authorities advised residents in vulnerable locations to remain alert and move to safer places if instructed.

The KSDMA urged people to avoid unnecessary travel , stay away from rivers and other water bodies, avoid night journeys through hilly areas and remain cautious about hazards such as uprooted trees, snapped power lines and flooding .

District and taluk-level emergency control rooms are functioning round the clock across Kerala to provide assistance. People requiring emergency support can contact the toll-free helpline numbers 1077 and 1070 , officials said.
