The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall in several northern districts of Tamil Nadu from Monday as a feeble trough along and off the state’s coast continues to influence weather conditions.

According to the latest forecast issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre on Saturday, isolated heavy rainfall is likely in Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Villupuram and Tiruvannamalai between August 17 and 19. The weather system is expected to remain active over the region during this period.

On August 19, the spell of heavy rain is likely to extend beyond the northern districts, with the Nilgiris also expected to receive heavy rainfall at isolated places, the weather agency said.

The IMD has also warned of lightning accompanied by gusty winds of 40–50 kmph at a few places across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal. Residents have been advised to remain cautious during thunderstorms and avoid exposed areas when lightning activity occurs.

Meanwhile, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea as squally weather, with winds reaching 40–50 kmph, is expected over parts of the southwest Bay of Bengal.

Several parts of the state have already recorded significant rainfall. Chinnakalar in Coimbatore received 9 cm of rain, the highest recorded during the 24-hour period ending Saturday night. Marakanam in Villupuram district followed with 8 cm of rainfall during the same period.

For Chennai, the Regional Meteorological Centre has forecast light to moderate rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and possible lightning, particularly during the evening or night hours on Sunday.

The continued trough and associated weather activity are likely to keep conditions unsettled across parts of Tamil Nadu over the coming days, with authorities and residents urged to remain alert to further weather updates.
