IMD Warns of Thunderstorms, Lightning Across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh

The skies over the two Telugu states are anything but quiet on June 11. The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for all districts of Telangana , warning that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph are very likely at isolated places through the day. For a region that has endured a punishing pre-monsoon stretch, what is coming is both overdue and demanding of caution.

Hyderabad is staring down a volatile afternoon. The city is forecast to see temperatures peaking at 38°C with 4mm of rainfall expected on June 11. Cloudy afternoons followed by evening thunderstorms define the outlook, as central Telangana edges toward the monsoon's arrival. In the north, Warangal , Nizamabad , and Karimnagar are among the districts most exposed to heavy localised downpours , particularly during the vulnerable evening hours.

The picture in Andhra Pradesh is equally charged. Scattered rain, thunderstorms, and heavy showers are expected across coastal Andhra, Rayalaseema , and adjoining areas between June 10 and 15, with gusty winds of 40 to 60 kmph adding to the hazard. Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada on the coast face active spells, while Rayalaseema's interior cities Kurnool and Tirupati , brace for sharp, unpredictable bursts driven by the circulation pushing inland. Temperatures across AP hover in the 33 to 35°C range , with humidity climbing steeply as the moisture surge deepens.

A weather circulation spanning Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh is fuelling cloud formation, while favourable Indian Ocean conditions are sustaining the moisture flow northward. Hyderabad and central Telangana could see the monsoon arrive within the next four to five days , making June 11 not an outlier but the opening act of a season that is decisively on its way.

Residents across both states should avoid open grounds during thunderstorm hours, stay off flooded roads, and treat every IMD advisory between now and monsoon onset as non-negotiable.
