India Bags 17 Medals, Including Four Gold, at U-23 Commonwealth Fencing Championships

India made a powerful start at the U-23 Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Lagos, Nigeria, winning an impressive 17 medals, including four gold, on the opening day of the competition.

The Indian contingent collected four gold, four silver and nine bronze medals as the championships got underway on Sunday. The event will continue until August 14.

India's dominance was evident across the fencing disciplines of Sabre, Foil and Epee, with at least one Indian fencer reaching the podium in each of the six individual events contested on the opening day.

In the men's Sabre, Nikhil Wagh clinched gold, while Lakshay Badser took silver. Ashwini Arya and Laishram Moramba added bronze medals, giving India a clean sweep of the podium places in the event.

Tejas Patil secured silver in men's Foil, with Hemash Sanasam winning bronze. In men's Epee, Lokesh Vemani claimed silver, while Shaurya Ashwini and Godwin Anbkess took bronze.

The Indian women also produced a commanding performance. Joys Ashita won gold in women's Foil, finishing ahead of compatriot Kanaglakshmi, who secured silver.

In women's Epee, Prachi Lohan emerged champion, while Nivedhya Nair and Anupriya won bronze medals. Jeferlin added another gold for India in women's Sabre, with Aakhari taking silver and Shreya Gupta claiming bronze.

The strong opening-day performance has given India an early advantage as the championships enter their remaining rounds.

Fencing Association of India Secretary General Rajeev Mehta congratulated the medal winners, coaches, support staff and families, praising their dedication behind India's impressive showing in Lagos.
