India, Bangladesh Border Chiefs Meet in Delhi as ‘Push-In’ Dispute Escalates
The 57th Director General-level border coordination conference between India’s Border Security Force (BSF) and Bangladesh’s Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) began in New Delhi on Monday, with the four-day talks expected to focus on escalating tensions over “push-in” allegations , border killings , fencing gaps, and cross-border security management.
The meeting, scheduled from June 8 to 11, comes amid heightened friction after recent reports of multiple incidents along the India–Bangladesh frontier, where both sides have accused each other of attempted illegal push-ins and violations of established border protocols. According to recent developments, dozens of individuals were allegedly involved in such incidents across several border points in the past week, further straining cooperation.
Bangladesh, led by BGB Director General Maj Gen Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui, is expected to press for an end to what it calls unilateral push-in attempts and raise concerns over border killings and repeated incidents along unfenced and vulnerable stretches of the 4,096-km-long border.
Dhaka has argued that any verified nationals should be returned through formal repatriation and nationality verification procedures , and not through informal border transfers. Bangladesh has also intensified surveillance along the frontier amid recent tensions.
India, however, maintains that only illegal foreign nationals are repatriated under due legal process and bilateral arrangements, and has urged Bangladesh to expedite nationality verification to facilitate smoother returns. New Delhi is also expected to highlight issues of trans-border crime, narcotics smuggling, and fencing gaps .
The Indian delegation is being led by BSF Director General Praveen Kumar. Officials from both sides say discussions will continue through the week, with no joint statement expected immediately.
