India and Bangladesh have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening border security and maintaining peace along their shared frontier after concluding the 57th Director General-level Border Coordination Conference in New Delhi. The four-day meeting, held from June 8 to 11, brought together senior officials of the Border Security Force (BSF) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) to discuss a range of security, migration and border-management issues amid heightened concerns over illegal crossings and alleged cross-border "push-ins."

The Bangladeshi delegation was led by BGB Director General Maj Gen Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui , while the Indian side was headed by BSF Director General Praveen Kumar . The conference was particularly significant as it was the first DG-level border meeting since the BNP-led government assumed office in Bangladesh earlier this year , and also came amid renewed political focus on illegal migration and border security in India.

A major focus of the discussions was the issue of illegal, inadvertent and forcible border crossings , which has emerged as a contentious subject in recent months. Bangladesh has repeatedly alleged that Indian authorities attempted to push undocumented migrants across the border without following established repatriation procedures, while India has maintained that illegal foreign nationals residing in the country must be returned through due legal processes. The issue has gained prominence following several reported incidents along the border and ongoing verification of suspected Bangladeshi nationals residing in India.

The two sides also held detailed discussions on border deaths , a long-standing concern in bilateral relations, as well as human trafficking , smuggling of narcotics, arms, counterfeit currency, gold and other contraband , and the activities of trans-border criminal networks. Border fencing, infrastructure development, attacks on security personnel, infiltration routes and implementation of the Coordinated Border Management Plan (CBMP) also figured prominently during the talks. Officials additionally reviewed emerging security challenges, including the need for greater vigilance and coordinated responses along the frontier.

India and Bangladesh share a 4,096-kilometre international border , one of the longest land boundaries in the world. More than half of this frontier, about 2,216 kilometres, lies in West Bengal. The issue of undocumented migration has become increasingly sensitive in the region, with authorities emphasizing stronger action against illegal infiltration. Bangladesh, meanwhile, has intensified patrols, intelligence gathering, drone surveillance and public awareness campaigns in border districts to prevent unauthorized crossings and alleged push-ins.

At the conclusion of the conference, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining peace, tranquillity and stability along the border. They agreed to strengthen coordinated patrols , enhance real-time intelligence sharing , improve surveillance and intensify joint efforts against trafficking, smuggling and other forms of cross-border crime. The delegations also emphasized the importance of sensitizing border residents about the sanctity of the international boundary and discouraging illegal activities in frontier areas.

The talks were described as being conducted in a cordial, positive and forward-looking atmosphere , reflecting the longstanding cooperation between the two border guarding forces. Both countries expressed satisfaction with the outcome and reiterated their commitment to deeper professional engagement and mutual trust in the interest of secure and peaceful borders.

Notably, the customary joint press conference by the heads of the two border forces was not held following the signing of the joint record of discussions, an unusual development for the DG-level meetings. The next round of border coordination talks is expected to take place in Dhaka in November 2026 , where both sides will review progress on the decisions taken in New Delhi and continue discussions on border management and security cooperation.
