India Begins Construction of Fourth Next Generation Coast Guard Patrol Vessel
India has taken another significant step towards strengthening maritime security and expanding indigenous defence manufacturing with the commencement of construction on the fourth of six next generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) for the Indian Coast Guard . The project moved forward after a keel laying ceremony was held at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai on Thursday.
The new patrol vessel is part of the Indian Coast Guard's fleet modernisation programme, aimed at enhancing maritime surveillance, search and rescue operations, maritime law enforcement, and coastal security. Equipped with modern machinery and state of the art systems, the vessel is being designed, developed and constructed in India, reinforcing the government's Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision and its commitment to building a self reliant defence sector.
According to the Ministry of Defence , the project marks an important milestone in strengthening the Coast Guard's operational capabilities and improving the country's ability to protect its vast coastline and maritime interests. As regional security challenges continue to evolve, the induction of these advanced vessels will significantly enhance India's preparedness at sea.
The keel laying ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Indian Coast Guard and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited , underlining the strategic importance of the project. The event represents another milestone in India's efforts to expand its indigenous naval and coast guard capabilities.
The contract for the construction of six next generation Offshore Patrol Vessels was awarded to Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited on December 20, 2023 . Since then, work has progressed steadily, with the fourth vessel now entering the construction phase while the remaining ships continue to move through different stages of production.
Once commissioned, these next generation OPVs will play a crucial role in coastal surveillance, anti smuggling operations, maritime safety, environmental protection, humanitarian assistance, and disaster response. Their induction will further strengthen the Indian Coast Guard's operational reach and improve its ability to safeguard India's maritime boundaries and strategic assets.
Beyond enhancing national security, the project also highlights the growing capabilities of India's indigenous shipbuilding industry . By building these sophisticated vessels domestically, the country is reducing dependence on imports, encouraging technological innovation, and reinforcing its long term objective of achieving self reliance in defence manufacturing.
