India Crush Sri Lanka By 124 Runs To Set Up Asian Games Gold-Medal Clash With Pakistan
India stormed into the Asian Games men’s T20 cricket final with a crushing 124-run victory over Sri Lanka, overcoming a long rain-disrupted wait for competitive action with a clinical all-round performance.
India had managed only one proper training session and a five-over-a-side practice game against Japan since arriving in Japan, with rain repeatedly affecting the schedule. But the extended break did little to blunt their intensity once the semifinal finally got underway.
On a difficult surface offering turn, drift and uneven bounce, India posted 169 for seven, a total that initially appeared competitive and later proved far beyond Sri Lanka’s reach.
Ishan Kishan played the key innings for India, remaining unbeaten on 80 off 46 balls after the team had lost four wickets. Teenager Vaibhav Sooryavanshi also provided valuable momentum at the top with a quick 38 off 21 balls.
India had watched Pakistan and Bangladesh play on the same surface and estimated that 140-150 could be a winning total. Their eventual score of 169 gave them a substantial cushion.
Sri Lanka's chase, however, quickly turned into a rout.
Jasprit Bumrah struck twice in the opening over, setting the tone for an extraordinary collapse. Sri Lanka were reduced to 33 for six during the powerplay and eventually folded for just 45 in 9.5 overs, their lowest total in the tournament.
Bumrah finished with two for seven, while Abhishek Sharma took two for two and Axar Patel claimed two for eight. India’s fielding was equally sharp, with three run-outs adding to Sri Lanka’s misery.
The victory also highlighted India’s ability to adapt quickly after the weather had limited their preparation. The bowlers made full use of a turning track, while the batters ensured that the team had enough runs on the board to put pressure on Sri Lanka.
India’s emphatic win has now set up a high-profile gold-medal clash against Pakistan, who defeated Bangladesh in the other semifinal.
The final will give India an opportunity to finish their Asian Games campaign with gold after an unusually disrupted build-up to the knockout stages.
